KHALEL DOSMUKHAMEDOV ATYRAU UNIVERSITY

Khalel Dosmukhamedov Atyrau University is one of the oldest higher education institutions in western Kazakhstan, with a rich history spanning more than eight decades.

The university traces its origins to 13 October 1939, when the Council of People's Commissars of the Kazakh SSR adopted Resolution No. 720, "On Measures for the Development of the Economy and Cultural Construction of the Guryev Region." The resolution provided for the establishment of a two-year Teachers' Institute in the city of Guryev (now Atyrau).

On 1 September 1940, the Guryev State Teachers' Institute officially opened its doors with an initial enrolment of 123 students.

The institute's first director was Abdi Boshynuly Tursunbayev, Doctor of Historical Sciences, Professor, and Honoured Scientist of the Kazakh SSR, who made a significant contribution to the development of higher education in the region.

On 14 June 1950, the Guryev Regional Executive Committee adopted a resolution, based on the decisions of the Council of Ministers of the USSR and the Council of Ministers of the Kazakh SSR, concerning the further development of teacher education in Guryev. This was followed by Order No. 115/T of the USSR Ministry of Higher Education, issued on 28 June 1950, which officially authorized the opening of the Teachers' Institute in Guryev.

In 1955, the Teachers' Institute was reorganized into the Guryev Pedagogical Institute, reflecting its expanding academic capacity and educational mission.

On 23 May 1994, by a resolution of the Cabinet of Ministers of the Republic of Kazakhstan, the institute was named after the prominent Kazakh scholar, physician, educator, and public figure Khalel Dosmukhamedov.

On 2 June 1994, the institution was granted university status and became Khalel Dosmukhamedov Atyrau University.

In 1996, the Atyrau Institute of Oil and Gas was incorporated into the university. However, in 1998, it regained its status as an independent higher education institution.

In 1999, the university was reorganized as the Republican State Enterprise "Khalel Dosmukhamedov Atyrau State University."

Since 2020, the institution has operated as the Non-Profit Joint-Stock Company "Khalel Dosmukhamedov Atyrau University."

In 2025, the university celebrated its 85th anniversary, marking more than eight decades of excellence in higher education, scientific research, and the education of highly qualified professionals for Kazakhstan and the international community.
