Academic Integrity League

Honest learning. Fair assessment. Responsible research.

Academic integrity is the basis of quality education, trust in a degree, and a fair grade. This page tells students, teachers, and researchers what is acceptable, what is not, and where to ask a question.

What is academic integrity?

It is more than “don’t copy”. It means submitting your own work in your own name, crediting other people’s ideas, and receiving a grade that matches the real result.

Academic integrity is honesty and openness in study, assessment, and research. It is not only the student’s duty. Teachers make criteria clear, researchers do not distort data or authorship, and the university applies the rules to everyone in the same way. That is how trust in a degree, a publication, and the university’s name is kept.

LearningKnowledge comes from your own work.
ResearchData and authorship can be checked.
TrustA grade and a degree show a real result.
ResponsibilityThe rules apply to students and teachers alike.

About the Academic Integrity League

The Academic Integrity League is an association of higher and postgraduate education organisations in Kazakhstan. It strengthens a culture of honesty, transparent assessment, research ethics, and the quality of education through shared standards. Members are expected to keep clear rules for citation and conduct and to prevent plagiarism. The full statements are on the league’s official website.

Atyrau University

The university and the league

Kh. Dosmukhamedov Atyrau University is named among higher education institutions on the Academic Integrity League’s official website. The year of joining and the level of membership are not published separately in that list, so this page does not state them. For the university, integrity means that coursework, exams, and research are done in your own name, with proper sources, and within the conditions set by the teacher.

Ten guides

Principles of academic integrity

These ten cards are a short reading of the league’s values for the university. The full wording is on the league’s website.

01

Honesty

You do the work and do not present someone else’s text or idea as your own.

02

Responsibility

Students, teachers, and researchers all answer for the result.

03

Fairness

The same requirements and the same assessment process apply to everyone.

04

Transparency

Criteria, prohibitions, and the path to appeal are known in advance.

05

Trust

A degree and a grade show real learning and real work.

06

Respect

Other people’s ideas, data, and intellectual property are acknowledged.

07

Academic independence

A tool may help, but the thinking and the conclusion stay yours.

08

Sound data

Figures, surveys, and experimental results are not invented or adjusted.

09

Authorship and intellectual property

Sources are cited, and co-authors’ contributions are not hidden.

10

Responsible use of AI

Artificial intelligence is used openly, within the assignment, and after checking.

Direction

Our aim

Learning, assessment, and research at the university should rest on honest work — and anyone should be able to ask when a rule is unclear.

Main tasks

01

Put the principles into practice

Make the rules of integrity clear in study and in internal documents.

02

Keep assessment fair

State the criteria in advance and apply them in the same way.

03

Prevent plagiarism

Stop copying, uncredited borrowing, and submitting someone else’s work under your name.

04

Student culture

Teach citation, group work, and exam conduct.

05

Teachers’ competence

Set the task, the check, and the AI conditions clearly.

06

Research ethics

Protect authorship, sound data, and publication ethics.

07

AI policy

Say openly where a tool is allowed and where it is not.

08

Fair review

Consider breaches without haste and by one procedure.

09

Openness

Answer questions and point to official sources.

Day to day

Integrity in practice

The assignment, the exam, and the group work go out in your name.

  • Your own workYou prepare the text, the calculation, and the project. A borrowed paragraph left unchanged is copying.
  • CitationAn idea, a figure, and a quoted passage come with a source.
  • Your earlier workAsk the teacher before you submit text that has already been graded.
  • HelpExplaining is fine. Writing the work for someone else, or sending a finished answer, is a breach.
  • DataDo not invent survey or experiment results.
  • Artificial intelligenceThe assignment says whether you may use it. If you are unsure, ask.

Using artificial intelligence honestly

There is no total ban on artificial intelligence, and no total permission either. The line is set by the assignment, the teacher, and any rule the university has published. The lists below are a general guide. For a particular piece of work, the teacher’s conditions come first.

May be allowed

Looking for ideas, asking for a difficult topic to be explained, shaping a structure, checking language, brainstorming, and — if the assignment allows it — help with programming. That is not submitting a finished text as your own work.

Must be disclosed

If a tool suggested text, code, a translation, or a structure, and the assignment asks you to say so, write it to the teacher or in the work itself. Name the tool and the step, briefly.

Not allowed

Having a tool write the whole work and submitting it as yours. Using AI in a prohibited exam. Adding sources that do not exist. Fabricating results. Bypassing the teacher’s requirements. Presenting an unchecked AI answer as a reliable fact.

The learner is responsible for the final content of the work and for the accuracy of the information in it.

Practice

Is this a breach of academic integrity?

This is not an exam. Choose a situation and read a short explanation. In a real assignment, the teacher’s conditions decide.

A friend sent last year’s paper. I used several paragraphs in mine.

I used ChatGPT to outline an essay and wrote the text myself.

In a group task, another student wrote my whole section.

I used an idea from an article and did not cite it.

I added a scholarly source suggested by AI without checking it.

Unsure about your own case? Ask.

A short check

Not sure?

1. Did I do this work myself?
2. Have I credited the ideas and sources correctly?
3. Have I followed the tools and requirements the teacher set?

Common questions

Frequently asked questions

What is plagiarism?

Submitting someone else’s text, idea, image, or code as your own without a source. Changing a few words does not replace a citation.

How do I cite correctly?

Put a direct quotation in quotation marks and name the author, the work, and the page or link. A paraphrase still needs the source of the idea. Follow the style your teacher asks for.

May I reuse my own work?

Only if the teacher allows it. Submitting text that was already graded, without saying so, can count as resubmission.

May I use ChatGPT?

It depends on the assignment. Ideas and a language check may be allowed; an exam or an independent task may forbid it. Read the conditions first.

Do I have to say that I used AI?

Yes, if the teacher or the assignment asks you to. Briefly name the tool and the step where it helped.

Is helping another student a breach?

Explaining is not. Writing their work, sending a finished answer, or helping during an exam may be a breach.

How should group work be done?

Each person does the share described in the assignment. If someone else writes your whole section, that contribution is hidden.

What happens if academic integrity is breached?

The consequence depends on the assignment and the university’s current procedure: the work may be returned, the grade reviewed, or a disciplinary measure applied. This page does not set the penalty.

What if I disagree with a grade?

First ask the teacher to explain the grade against the criteria. If the dispute remains, describe it in the form on this page. The page itself does not decide the case.

How is authorship decided in research?

An author is a person who actually contributed. Adding a name without a contribution, or removing someone who did the work, breaks authorship.

Academic Integrity Code

Updated 02.10.2026

Academic integrity is a shared responsibility of the university community.

The rules are not there to catch one person. They keep trust in the degree and in research. If you are unsure, ask before you submit.
