Scholars from Kh. Dosmukhamedov Atyrau University are taking part in the Global Fishery Forum 2026, an international forum being held in St. Petersburg, Russia.
As part of this year’s Global Fishery Forum 2026, a conference was held on the topic “Caspian Without Borders: Science, Ecology and Digital Technologies for the Benefit of the Fisheries Sector.”
The event brought together representatives of scientific, educational and industry organisations from Kazakhstan, Russia, Iran and the Republic of Cyprus. Participants discussed the development of education in the fisheries sector, scientific research, digitalisation of the industry, conservation of aquatic biological resources, and sustainable development of the Caspian region.
At the international forum, alongside foreign researchers, Kazakhstani scholars delivered presentations and presented domestic research projects being carried out in these areas.
Representing Kh. Dosmukhamedov Atyrau University, Gulshat Zhumatova, Head of the Caspian Integrated Research and Monitoring Laboratory, delivered a presentation entitled “Development of Education and Research in Fisheries at Kh. Dosmukhamedov Atyrau University: Sustainable Development, Digitalisation and Conservation of the Ural–Caspian Ecosystem.”
Today, Kh. Dosmukhamedov Atyrau University is actively developing specialist training in the fisheries sector. The university’s Caspian Integrated Research and Monitoring Laboratory is currently conducting research in this field. One of the laboratory’s key areas of activity is studying the environmental condition of the Ural–Caspian Basin, conserving aquatic biological resources and contributing through scientific research to the sustainable development of the region.
Within the framework of the international forum, Gulshat Zhumatova, Head of the Caspian Integrated Research and Monitoring Laboratory, and Gulnara Saparova, Associate Professor of the Department of Biology and Fisheries and a forum delegate, presented the research areas, scientific proposals and key projects of the university’s scholars related to the environmental situation in the Atyrau Region and current challenges facing the fisheries sector.
In addition, Saule Asylbekova, a prominent Kazakhstani scholar, Doctor of Biological Sciences, Professor and Academician of the National Academy of Sciences of Kazakhstan, delivered a presentation entitled “Distribution of Commercial Fish Species in the Kazakh Sector of the Caspian Sea Based on Trawl and Hydroacoustic Survey Data.”
The participation of Atyrau University scholars in the Global Fishery Forum 2026 provided an opportunity to exchange expertise, strengthen international scientific and educational cooperation, and discuss joint approaches to conserving the biological resources of the Caspian region and ensuring the sustainable development of the fisheries sector.
