Environmental Awareness Session on Water Conservation Held at Atyrau University

An environmental awareness session titled “Saving Water - Securing the Future” was held at Kh. Dosmukhamedov Atyrau University within the framework of the national “Taza Kazakhstan” environmental campaign.

The purpose of the event was to draw attention to the issue of water scarcity in the region, foster a culture of water conservation among students and young people, and enhance environmental awareness.

In her opening remarks, Vice-Rector for Social Affairs and Youth Policy Lyaila Koishygulova emphasized the alignment of water resource protection with the national “Taza Kazakhstan” program:

“Today, Kazakhstan is entering a new stage of development. One of the key initiatives of this stage is the national environmental program “Taza Kazakhstan.” This program is not only aimed at environmental protection, but also at fostering ecological culture in society, promoting resource conservation, and encouraging responsible attitudes toward nature. In this regard, the protection of water resources is a core component of the “Taza Kazakhstan” concept. The Atyrau region holds a unique and strategic position in terms of water resources. On the one hand, it is located along the great Ural River, and on the other, it borders the Caspian Sea - one of the world’s unique water systems,” the Vice-Rector noted.

Didar Zhanibekuly, Acting Director for Atyrau Region of the Department of Science and Innovation of the Ministry of Water Resources and Irrigation of the Republic of Kazakhstan, highlighted in his speech:

“One of the most tragic environmental disasters of the 20th century is the desiccation of the Aral Sea. This issue has become a global concern for humanity. Today, concrete measures are being implemented to restore the Aral Sea and preserve water systems. In this context, the introduction of water-saving technologies in both agriculture and industry is a necessity of our time. Rational water use can save up to 260 million cubic meters of water annually.”

During the session, key issues related to water resources and environmental safety in the Atyrau region were discussed. Zarina Turebayeva, Deputy Head of the Regional Department of Natural Resources, presented on regulatory measures for environmental management. Arman Zhumagaziyev, Senior Lecturer of the Department of Geography and Tourism, provided a comprehensive analysis of regional water resources, with particular focus on the current ecological condition of the Ural River.

University students Elvira Ibraim and Dilnaz Dosmukhambetova shared their ideas on promoting a culture of responsible water consumption among youth and addressing emerging challenges related to water security in Kazakhstan.

The session reinforced the understanding that water is not only a natural resource but also a strategic asset of critical importance. At the conclusion of the event, students were provided with practical recommendations on simple and effective ways to conserve water in everyday life.

At the end of the event, senior lecturers Arman Zhumagaziyev, Zhumagul Karamurziyeva, and Gauкhar Batyrbayeva, as well as students Dilnaz Dosmukhambetova (3rd year, “Applied Ecology”), Ibrakhim Shynybayev (4th year, “Geography and History Teacher Education”), and Inkar Sabyrgaliyeva (3rd year), were awarded Letters of Appreciation from the Minister of Water Resources and Irrigation of the Republic of Kazakhstan.
