The training of journalism specialists at H. Dosmukhamedov Atyrau University dates back to 2001. In that year, the first cohort of students was admitted to the Bachelor’s program 5B050400 – “Journalism,” which was implemented within the Department of Kazakh Language, Literature, and Journalism. At that time, the department was headed by Doctor of Philological Sciences, Professor K.O. Zhusip.

A significant contribution to the development of journalism education was made by the prominent scholar, writer, and academician Zeynolla Kabdolov, who delivered lectures and played an important role in shaping the academic foundation of the program.

In subsequent years, the department was led by experienced scholars:

  1. from 2005 to 2010 — Candidate of Philological Sciences, Associate Professor A.T. Sadykova,
  2. from 2010 — Candidate of Philological Sciences, Associate Professor S.S. Dutbaeva,
  3. from 2010 to 2014 — Candidate of Philological Sciences, Associate Professor Aikumis Kydyrbaikyzy.

At the initial stage, journalism training was conducted alongside Kazakh philology, which contributed to the development of an integrated academic and methodological framework. Special emphasis was placed on practice-oriented education, including the involvement of regional media professionals.

In the 2006–2007 academic year, a training television center was established with the support of the university administration and later integrated into the department’s structure. Students acquired practical skills in video production, editing, and television journalism. A radio studio was also launched. In 2007–2008, the “Journalistic Skills” laboratory was created, significantly enhancing practical training.

On June 19, 2017, by decision of the University Academic Council, the Department of Journalism was established as an independent structural unit, marking a new stage in its development.

From 2016 to 2023, the department was headed by Candidate of Philological Sciences, Associate Professor M.T. Mukasheva. During this period, the curriculum was modernized, practical training was strengthened, and cooperation with the media industry was expanded.

Since 2019, the educational program “6B03201 – Journalism and Information” has been implemented. In October 2023, the department was renamed “Journalism and Public Relations.”

Currently, the department is headed by Doctor of Philosophy, Professor O.K. Bekezhan. The faculty includes highly qualified academics and practicing journalists. Modern educational technologies are actively employed, ensuring the integration of theoretical knowledge and practical skills.

The department maintains strong partnerships with regional and national media organizations, media holdings, and governmental institutions, contributing to effective professional training.
